Fish Matter…Treanor Hit’s First Career HR, Hammer Time

In case you did not notice, Matt Treanor blasted his first career major league homerun off Daniel Cabrera of the Baltimore Orioles. The HR came in Treanor’s 267th career at bat. Matt had a hard time getting the sentimental ball back. Check out what he had to part with just to pry the ball out of a stubborn Orioles’ fan’s hand.

It cost Matt Treanor a bat and an baseball autographed by Miguel Cabrera but the Marlins catcher got back the ball he hit Tuesday for his first major-league home run.

”I think the guy got away with murder,” Treanor said of the Orioles fan who caught the ball in Camden Yards’ left-field bleachers, then negotiated a trade.

Treanor, who said he plans to give the keepsake ball to his father, joked Wednesday that his newfound power might change his game.

”I’m only 754 [homers] behind Hank Aaron,” said the third-year catcher, who waited 267 at-bats to hit his first home run — the longest drought of any current major-league position player.

Even though Treanor was not used to the homerun trot around the bases he stayed classy from a bit of advice he got in High School.

Injury and Media Notes…

• Josh Willingham, on the disabled list since June 7 with a sprained left hand, is expected to rejoin the Marlins for tonight’s series finale in Baltimore. Chris Aguila was optioned to Triple A Albuquerque, N.M., after Wednesday’s game to make room for Willingham on the roster.

Personally Ambercrombie needs to be sent down to work on a few things and Aguila should be on the bench for defensive replacements and spot starts.

• Second baseman Dan Uggla was out of the lineup Wednesday after his right hamstring tightened up during Tuesday’s game. Uggla, who had started all but two of the Marlins’ 67 games before Wednesday, is day to day.

• Bill Beck, the Marlins’ senior director of travel, will fill in for Dave Van Horne on the WQAM broadcast tonight.

For those of you who listen via radio this is a blessing.
