Nolasco Stifles Phillies Behind Almost No-No

MARLINS 4, PHILLIES 1

One of the best things to experience in sports is the no hitter. Marlins fans almost witnessed one last night as Ricky Nolasco sitlfed the Phillies for 7.1 innings last night in a 4-1 win. Let’s journey into the Marlins locker room post game and see how the club feels.

Joe what did you think of your young stud pitchers performance tonight?

“To me, if you’re a fan, that’s an outstanding game to watch,” Marlins manager Joe Girardi said. “As a manager, it’s an outstanding game to watch, because it’s all about execution. In a 0-0 game, you can’t make mistakes.”

What about you Ricky? Did you know you had a no-no going or were you just executing pitches?

“I’m not going to sit here and say I wasn’t more locked in, knowing I hadn’t given up a hit yet,” said Nolasco, who once in high school had a five-inning no-hitter in a 10-run mercy-rule game. “You just try to keep making quality pitches and help the team.”

“My first reaction was, ‘I probably should have had that ball,’” Nolasco said. “My second reaction was, ‘It was fun while it lasted, but I’ve got to get this guy out now.’”

Joe Girardi remembers a moment with David Cone in 99 when he threw his perfect game…

“David Cone said, ‘My future and the playoffs are more important than this one no-hitter,’” Girardi said. “To me, a guy’s future is always more important than one no-hitter.”
