New Marlins Ballpark Looks Promising

Some of us have always wondered about big-league baseball in Florida: Will it work in an area so transient, so distracted, so prone to rain?

For that reason it always seemed likely that the Florida Marlins would be headed elsewhere. Nobody on the municipal or state side seemed overly able when it came to arranging a new ballpark, which the Marlins absolutely require when they play in the most gosh-forsaken facility in all of baseball.

Now, it seems, machinery is moving and a new ballpark is all but headed for the Miami area. A new governor, Charlie Crist, is going to help. A nice location a mile from Biscayne Bay and close to I-95 seems to be the best spot available. And the local mucky-mucks are finally joining with Crist to provide financing on a $500-million facility with — and this is essential — a retractable roof.

The Marlins have one of the best young teams in baseball, emphasis on young. It looks as if they’re finally going to get a ballpark worthy of an up-and-coming contender.

Now I know there are not alot of Marlins fans on this board (at least from the comments I have gotten there are only a few) but what do you think as a South Floridian about the location of the new Marlins ballpark?

I’ll believe it when I see it.

And even THEN, I’d be surprised if we drew more than 18k a night.

SoFla just keeps disappointing me as a baseball town and I
m skeptical a new ballpark is the answer, no matter where it’s located.

    Jon,

I am on the same page as you. We keep complaining about a new stadium but once we get that stadium will it ACTUALLY improve attendance? I think the Marlins are going to be in a huge shit storm if they get this stadium and still fail to draw a profit and fill seats every night. I can tell you one thing, if they trade Dontrelle and Cabrera, I won’t even go to games.
