Rumblings: Trent Green to the Phins?

It’s pretty well known by now that Joey Harrington will be cut if not today by the end of the week. That leaves a veteran void behind Daunte Culpepper. No one really knows the status of Daunte or what will be the status of Daunte by training camps. Cleo Lemon is slotted to challenge DC for the starting job this upcoming season. But what happens if neither perform up to par? The Dolphins would be left in another sticky quarterback situation. Enter Trent Green, the veteran presence the Dolphins need to step in at anytime if needed. And not just step in at anytime to fill a void. Step in and actually WIN! Trent Green is not on the block as of today, but Damon Huard signed a three year contract extension yesterday, leaving speculation that Green is on his way out. Alex Marvez reports in his Sun-Sentinel column…

The Dolphins would have interest in acquiring Kansas City’s Trent Green if placed on the trading block by the Chiefs, a source said at the NFL Scouting Combine. Green would be an intriguing fit for the Dolphins, which enter the offseason with uncertainty at the quarterback position. Green played under new Dolphins coach Cam Cameron when both were with Washington from 1995 to 1998 and is familiar with the new offensive system that the latter is installing. New Dolphins quarterbacks coach Terry Shea also held that same position with the Chiefs while working with Green for four of the past five seasons.

I would really welcome this move. He is a much more talented product then Joey Harrington will ever be and gives the Dolphins the option to start him if need be and actually contend this year. I’ve always been a fan of Trent Green. Here are his numbers from last season.

Would you welcome a trade for Trent?

No. This was a great idea about six years ago. I’m sick of rehashed, recycled, injury prone players coming down here and I’m sick of giving up draft picks for guys who bust out. I’d rather take my chances with Cleo Lemon. That’s right. I said it.

Six years ago Trent would be asking for a boat load of money. Look I’m not saying he come in and take the starting job over. I want to put as much pressure on Daunte Culpepper to come back close to 100%. Daunte is lazy and any motivation is going to help. Now mind you that is one pricey piece of motivation. But at least he can do a more competent job then Joey H and probably more then Cleo.

He might be old, he might have been injured last year, but I still consider him a top 10 QB in the league.

If the price is right then I say why not. We can’t give up any draft picks though.
