Matter Around the Water Cooler
Couple of site notes for you guys before you do a keg stand at the water cooler. I added a new, more robust contact form in the header menu. Protects me from unwanted spammers hitting the contact form. Feel free to test it out and send me a note on how much I suck. I also did some condensing of the SporTech Pages section on the sidebar. All information pertaining to each sport is now on the same page keeping things a little more tidy. I also removed the expandable comments for each post. I felt it was useless and was conflicting with another script. That’s it for site updates. Let’s see what we missed at the coo coo coolah while you were too busy fighting over who gets the master bedroom in the Real World suite in Las Vegas…
- Dolphins re-signed CB Michael Lehan and FB Kyle Eckel. Lehan was an unrestricted free agent and is mostly a special teamer. Eckel was an exclusive rights free agent and will compete for a roster spot behind Cory Schlesinger.
- Ed Belfour credits the team trainer and strength coach for his continued good health. The Panther personnel placed Belfour on a rigorous stretching program to ensure that his surgically repaired back remains healthy. While many predicted that Belfour was washed up, he has proved his critics wrong. Not only is he having a healthy year, in which he has started the past 23 consecutive games, but his statistics are decent. He has 23 wins, a 2.78 GAA and a .902 save percentage. It will be interesting to see what happens in the Florida net in the off-season, as Belfour will once again be an unrestricted free-agent.
- Upon further review, the NHL on Sunday awarded center Olli Jokinen an assist from Saturday’s game. The league ruled Jokinen should be awarded the second assist (originally awarded Ruslan Salei) on Gregory Campbell’s first-period goal. The assist gave Jokinen six points (two goals, four assists) in the game to set the franchise record. Pavel Bure recorded five points in a game at Atlanta in 2001. Jokinen’s last goal was the game-winner, giving him a team-high six such goals this season. Jokinen needs 14 points in Florida’s final 10 games to match last year’s career-best 89-point season.
- Marcus Vick won’t be in court in Montgomery County this week. A hearing scheduled for this week in the case of a teen girl who is suing the Miami Dolphins player was postponed after the judge recused himself.
- Jeremy Hermida fouled a ball off his right knee Saturday and, as a result, didn’t make the trip to Viera on Sunday. The injury is not believed to be serious, and Gonzalez said Hermida could be ready to play as soon as today.
- Alejandro De Aza received the start in center Sunday, though it appears the Marlins are thinking long range for the left-handed hitter from the Dominican Republic. De Aza has been impressive this spring, hitting .333 and stealing four bases. But De Aza, 22, might require more seasoning in the minors. He spent about half of last season at Double A Carolina, hitting .278 with 27 stolen bases.
- From the local scene: One of our good buddies Rick over at SOTP points out that Dan Marino has his Weston home on the market. In fact you can take a video tour of the lovely paradise. Tour Dan Marino’s House
That wraps up Monday. Hope everyone had a good one. No games are scheduled tonight for South Florida teams. After the ass whooping the Heat took yesterday they need the rest. NIT Tournament’s are on tonight or check the Rangers/Penguins on Versus.
