Not Much of a Shocker, D-Train Gets Opening Day Nod
Once again SporTech brings you the breaking news you can’t find anywhere else. Dontrelle Willis has been given the nod by first year manager Fredi Gonzalez to take the bump against the Washington Nationals on April 2 in Washington. This will be the second straight season Train gets the start on opening day. He is the Marlins leader on and off the field and deserves the starting gig. Not to mention he leads the team in DUI arrests and public urination. From Joe Frisaro’s MLB.com article…
“I’m excited, I wanted it. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to have it next year,” Willis said. “You never want to assume anything in this game.”
The decision was announced on Monday morning by manager Fredi Gonzalez. Asked why it was Willis, Gonzalez joked: “It landed heads. … Come on.
“He’s the guy who has been here the longest. He’s the leader of that pitching staff. He’s the guy we want there for the matchup.”
Rounding out the Fish rotation will be Scott Olsen, Anibal Sanchez and Ricky Nolasco, who will start the home opener on April 6 against the Phillies at Dolphin Stadium.
The Marlins are using a 4 man rotation until April 15th. The 5th spot is up for grabs but the heavy favorite is Sergio Mitre.
One step closer to opening day. The home opener is that Friday at 7:05PM. Anyone going to make it out?
