The Fish Are Floundering

Panic Panic Panic! The Marlins have dropped 5 straight and have been outscored 38-13 in those 5 losses. Jorge Julio and Alejandro De Aza have been placed on the DL, Miguel Cabrera is nursing a sore oblique, and 75% of our starting rotation is hurting. If anyone felt a little teased by the start the Marlins got off to, I don’t blame you. The Marlin’s have gone from world beaters to being beaten by the world. Those clutch hits are not coming anymore and the blunders on the basepaths and on the field just seem to be getting worse. I don’t want to group us in the “Panic like Philly” category but the fundamentals of baseball are just not being followed. While Miguel Cabrera has been the offensive force on this team, the Marlins are getting contributions on offense from everyone. If Cabrera is to miss anytime, Mike Jacobs feels the others can step it up…
“We’ll have to step up as a team,” Jacobs said. “One guy doesn’t make our lineup, but he is a huge part of it. He would be one less big bat, and he is clutch in so many ways. He is our guy.”
The word on Cabrera is he is 50/50 for tonights matchup against the last place Nationals (who by the way have been playing much better ball lately). According to Mike Berardino’s blog, don’t be surprised to see Cabs sit out the whole weekend series to be ready for Atlanta on Monday.
Other Fish Notes: The Marlins are among the teams expressing interest in right-handed reliever Jose Capellan, as reported by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. According to a source who has spoken to both clubs, a deal is doubtful because the Brewers want ’something big in return.
Sergio Mitre threw his normal side session Thursday at Dolphin Stadium without any problems. He wore a patch on the finger during the session, but he can’t use one when he pitches in the game. It’s possible the Marlins could have an emergency starter on standby, one called up from the minors, perhaps, and add him to the roster (while likely placing Mitre on the disabled list to make room) if Mitre feels he can’t pitch effectively.
As always, GO FISH!!!
