Covering the South Florida Sports Market One Loss at a Time…

Heat Turns Attention to Juan Carlos Navarro, Steve Francis

I’m doing my best to lift everyone’s offseason Heat spirit’s. J David from Miami Heat Wired is doing his best as well. It’s all doom and gloom among Heat fans in South Florida. So get that Mo Williams name out of your head and let’s pay attention to what the Heat are doing to make improvements and prove Zo made the right decision to return next season. Here are some of the headlines this morning surrounding the Heat…

The Heat and Steve Francis’ agent, Jeff Fried, had discussions on Monday. President Pat Riley has said he wouldn’t let market conditions force him to overpay for players in decline. The Heat can offer a starting salary that is all or a part of its $5.4 million mid-level exception; all or part of the $1.8 million bi-annual exception; or the eight-year veteran’s minimum of $1.1 million.
A representative for free-agent point guard Brevin Knight said the Heat hasn’t offered a contract to Knight. Charlotte bought out Knight’s contract last week. In my opinion, this is a very good thing.
According to a league source, the Heat is preparing to make a trade offer to the Wizards for guard Juan Carlos Navarro, who recently negotiated his way out of a contract with FC Barcelona, one of the top teams in Europe.

Ira Winderman sheds some light on deals he would look into making…

Ira seems to think that if we try to acquire Juan Carlos Navarro from Washington, they will make the Heat take on the contract of either Brendan Haywood or Etan Thomas which might require us to part ways with Udonis Haslem The Crushernaut (Sorry for not using his proper name, thanks to The Dude for calling me out on this). What do you make of that?
James Posey in a sign and trade for Golden States Mickael Pietrus. This one I can handle.
See if Atlanta would be interested in swapping Anthony Johnson for Michael Doleac. Meh?

Ira goes on to talk about how Jason Williams can become an even bigger factor this season than we think. While I agree with his statements I am not about to get myself all hyped up and excited about the potential of Jason Williams to play in 2/3 of the Heat’s games this season. He has stated before he does not want to leave Miami and he does have a contract year coming up. He might not play in all the games, but look for J-Will to do his best to get on the court every night and give 110%. J-Will could be a huge piece in our offseason. I compare this to getting a pitcher back from the disabled list after the trading deadline. It’s like making a deal without making a deal at all. Hopefully Jason doesn’t prove me wrong.

Wade on the Heat’s offseason

”We would love to beef our team up, make some power moves, but it just didn’t work out,” Wade said. ‘I don’t care what nobody says, we’re still the team people are going to mark on their calendars as long as [Shaquille O'Neal] is on that court, as long as Alonzo and me are out there. People will look at the Heat and say, `We’ve got to worry about that game.’ ”

Damn right Wade, damn right.

Your Heat off-season coverage has been outstanding, JD.

I, for one, would love to see Steve Francis down here. He’s definately a player in decline but his makeup seems to fit what a Pat Riley-Shaq team is all about. I’m with you. I just can’t get myself fired up about J-Will and his crumbling knees anymore. Francis would add insurance and the guy is still an explosive perimeter player when he wants to be (and I can see him having a nice bounce-back season under Riley). I’m all for bringing Stevie Franchise down here for the price Riles has in mind.

Losing Udonis? No!!!!!! And please address him by his proper moniker next time.

Still, Navarro would be a nice fit and we need to get in on the European players trend. So I hope Riles works something out there. As for losing out on Mo… meh. The Bucks clearly overpaid for him and while he would’ve been a very nice addition, he’s wasn’t going to be the missing link for another title run.

    Out.

I don’t know what the hell I was thinking their. That will be fixed ASAP and I will lose my man card for one day.

Oh know doubt about it. While I was trying not to get my hopes up about Mo I knew all along his agent was using the Heat to drive up his price. Can’t blame the guy. It’s his first contract after his rookie one. Might be his only chance to get paid before he is 30.

It’s nice to hear from you Dude. Hope everything is going well.
