Scott Olsen Suspended Two Games for Being a D-Bag
Scott Olsen hasn’t been anything to write home about this season and the way he acts on and off the field would have you believe he is a number one starter. Olsen’s fiery and sometimes obnoxious attitude finally caught up to him on Sunday as Fredi Gonzalez has suspended him for two games for insubordination and conduct detrimental to the team. Olsen missed last nights game and will miss tonights game but will not miss his start later this week. Joe Capozzi breaks down what happened in the dugout after Olsen’s outing on Sunday…
After a successful, but frustrating, five-inning outing Sunday, sources said Olsen scuffled with fellow starter Sergio Mitre in a tunnel behind the Florida dugout during the bottom of the fifth. The trouble apparently began with a faulty button on Olsen’s jersey. After Olsen came off the mound in the middle of the fifth inning, he tore off his jersey, threw it at a clubhouse attendant and demanded a new one. Sources said Mitre admonished Olsen for his behavior. That led to the scuffle while third baseman Miguel Cabrera was at bat.
So every year we can expect an outburst like this with a teammate from Olsen and he will be punished like a little kid. I’ve always liked Olsen and I’ve always been a fan of his balls to the wall attitude but enough is enough already. First of all, you can’t mess with the Mi-Train, he will mess you up. Secondly, Olsen has no right to be throwing his attitude around the clubhouse when he hasn’t lived up to the hype of being the number 2 starter on this team. Perhaps it’s time for a change in scenery although I don’t know what good that would do when he would be pitching in a more volatile environment wherever he goes. Perhaps him and David Wells would get along?
The fact is we had a great chance of moving Olsen in the off season and securing a nice center fielder using someone like the Devil Rays as a trade partner. A Delmon Young or Rocco Baldelli rings a bell.
