Hanley Ramirez is going to need to make some more room on his trophy shelf because more and more are going to start rolling in. Let’s start with his most recent award, voted by his peers as The Sporting News’ top shortstop in the National League. In 2007 he batted .332 with 29 home runs, 81 RBIs, 51 stolen bases and a franchise-record 125 runs scored. Hanley had a message for all his peers who voted him as the best shortstop…

“I want to thank the players. There are a lot of guys who were deserving, but only one that could win,” Ramirez said. “This is what you work for, to be recognized. I want to thank my teammates because you can’t do it alone.”

So young, so humble, how can you not like this kid? He doesn’t have that cocky look at me attitude and goes about his business on a daily basis. He doesn’t need fancy top step dugout dances or loud chants coming through the loud speakers at Dolphin Stadium. It’s just business as usual.

Ramirez’s agent is not surprised by his numbers and never expected a sophomore slump from Hanley…

“This year in Spring Training, he was in my office, and he said, ‘I’m going to hit 30 homers, and I’m going to be MVP.’ I said, ‘MVP of the team?’ He said, ‘MVP of the league.’ We kind of laughed it off, but it showed how confident he was. He was unbelievable this year.”

Amazing, simply amazing. When does Spring Training start?
