The Heat is Off

Detroit 91 – Miami 80
Recap | Boxscore | Video | Photos
The Heat dropped the season opener last night to the Detroit Pistons 91-80 in front of a thin crowd at the American Airlines Arena. All around play was sloppy as guys like Smush Parker and Penny Hardaway looked like they were having a hard time fitting in. The Heat were destroyed, as usual, by Tayshaun Prince who weaved his way to a career-high 34 points and matched a career best with 12 rebounds.
The one bright spot for the Heat was new Heatian Ricky Davis who scored 23 points for Miami, which dropped its opener for the second successive season. Sure, this one was closer than the 108-66 ring-night debacle against the Chicago Bulls last year, but that’ll offer little consolation.
Miami’s woes from the free throw line continued from last season as they shot 9-15 from the line. This team needs to play a more controlled game of basketball. The sloppy play via passes and turnovers is going to be a problem all year but it has to be limited.
Shaq oh Shaq. Where have you been and when are you going to decide to come off vacation? I am now anointing Shaq as “The Big Salary Cap Hit” until he starts to perform and stops looking like a clumsy bastard.
The Heat now slide up to Indy to take on the Pacers from Canseco Fieldhouse. Tip is at 7:00 PM.
Note: Heat coach Pat Riley said after the game he might have a “decision” about Wade’s rehab schedule Friday.
