Miguel Cabrera Speaks (With Translator of Course)
It’s always nice to get the opinion of the player involved in trade rumors, especially when he barely talks to the media in the first place. Miguel Cabrera recently sat down with Boris Mizrahi from LasMayores.com and answered some questions regarding his pending trade.
On the news that he is on the trading block…
“I knew that sooner or later this situation would present itself, but I never thought it would be this soon,” the Marlins third baseman told LasMayores.com. “I understand that this is a business, although I would like to stay in Miami. This is my home; I started my career here and my daughter was born here.”
Where he would like to end up if he has to leave the Marlins…
“There’s really not one team in particular that I can say I’d like to go to; the only thing I can do is wait and see what the Marlins do,” said Cabrera. “Whichever team I go to [even if it means staying put], I’ll play my baseball and try to win. I try not to think about where I’ll be playing.”
On all the talk of him being out of shape…
“This winter, I’m really going to work on my physical condition in order to be in the best shape possible for Spring Training,” said Cabrera. “I’ve been at it for four weeks now at a gym that specializes in professional athletes, and I’ll be there until the spring.”
On what position he would like to play if and when he moves to his new team…
“I’d like to stay at third, but if the team feels that it’s best for me and everyone that I play somewhere else, that’s what I’ll do. The important thing is to play every day and to help the team on defense as well as offense. I’d have no problem playing first, or even the outfield again, if that’s how I can help my team in 2008.”
Miggy says all the right things. Whatever team is interested in Cabrera will definitely enjoy hearing his good attitude. Getting back in shape will definitely help his trade value. Getting the weight down is one thing but keeping it off is another. After reading this it’s going to be even harder seeing him go.
