Good News Marlins Fans

Looks like the Mets are bailing us out again. I find it hilarious the amount of money we were considering throwing at this over hyped catcher who had 3 good weeks of baseball last season and made everyone fall in love with him. It just goes to show you how much Paul LoDuca has fallen off that teams are throwing three years at Yorvit Torrealba. The New York Times has the scoop…

The Mets have zeroed in on Torrealba, who played for the National League champion Colorado Rockies, and could offer him a multiyear deal worth as much as $5 million annually, which would be a hefty raise from the $1.075 million he was paid last season. The Rockies remain interested in retaining Torrealba — the Florida Marlins are suitors, too — but have reportedly capped their offer at $7 million for two years and would not match what the Mets would give him. Efforts to obtain comments from Torrealba’s agent, Melvin Román, were unsuccessful last night.

I don’t understand the love fest for Yorvit. Sure the catching market is very thin but would Yorvit be more of an upgrade over a Paul LoDuca or Michael Barrett? Last season, the 29–year-old Torrealba started at least 67 games in a season for the first time during his seven-year career, which has been spent mostly as a back-up. He hit just .212 with two HR in 193 at-bats while away from Colorado’s hitter-friendly Coors Field.

I say we move our attention to Michael Barrett or a Gerald Laird from the Texas Rangers. It’s also quite possible the Marlins will make a strong push to bring LoDuca back who could possibly be had cheaper than Yorvit.

Any of you have any better catching options?

Edit: I forgot to mention that it must be a sign when you do a Google Image search for Yorvit Torrealba that this comes up. Do not mess with Google.
