Cabrera, Willis Traded to Detroit

Sorry for the delay, was out doing family stuff when the news came down. While I expected it, it seems to hurt now that it’s done. I feel this was the best package we had available to us and Larry Beinfest did a bang up job. The only thing keeping this team together is the elusive LB. Read more on the trade over on MLB.com. Here is the complete package (click on each player’s name for statpacks)…
A source familiar with the negotiations has told MLB.com that the Tigers are parting with outfielder Cameron Maybin and lefty starter Andrew Miller and four prospects for the final two players from the Marlins’ 2003 World Series championship squad. Also heading to Florida will be catcher Mike Rabello, and pitchers Dallas Trahern, Eulogio De La Cruz and Burke Badenhop.
The way I look at it is like this. Cameron Maybin is as sure of a superstar in the making as Miguel Cabrera was when he flashed on the scene. Andrew Miller will slide right in and take over Dontrelle’s role with even nastier stuff and comes even cheaper. We take a step back but also take a step forward. Mike Rabelo should platoon with Matt Trenor to form a strong defensive backstop. While it’s hard to part with some guys who we were close to us, remember folks, we root for the name on the front of the jersey as well as the name on the back.
One thing I saw over on CameronMaybin.tv was his favorite motto or saying in which he replied, “It’s only a matter of timeâ€!
Damn right kid, damn right.
Update…
I left this comment in the MB.com forums and I thought I would share with you.
I mean seriously people what do you expect? We’re the freakin Florida Marlins. You can’t tell me your going to really stop watching the young, exciting Marlins are you? Sure you don’t have to support and give money but are you seriously going to stop your daily baseball routine of watching your Marlins every single night on TV? Yucking it up in the game threads with other die hard fans. I sure as hell can’t see that out of my daily routine. These guys are exciting and fun to watch. Sure Cabrera and Willis were OUR guys but you can’t be that blind and think these guys were going to get Pujols type contracts and be the cornerstones of this franchise for the next 10 years. I did at one point and have now seen the light. Look who’s running the ship!
As much as we may have our ups and downs during the season, you can’t tell me you don’t love seeing these guys succeed. It’s alot more fun than watching a bunch of overpaid veterans who take plays off and half ass it because the have a sore groin from taking a piss.
I’m considering this a fresh start. We have a new leader and all around badass of the team in Hanley with a pimp roaming spacious centerfield in Cam Maybin. We have a pitcher with nastier stuff, and luckily for Loria’s next painting purchase alot cheaper than Dontrelle Willis in our rotation next season. I think Miller is going to dominate NL lineups. Hammah in LF continuing to be a super bad ass and all around baseball slayer and Hermida looking to continue with his fantastic end of 2007. That’s one solid OF for a team that had a huge hole just last season. Granted we have no idea whats going on at third but you know LB will take care of that ASAP. Uggs at 2B doing his 2B thing. I’m not a huge fan of Jake but if he could stay healthy for a whole season he might be a pleasant surprise. The rotation is hard to put together yet with injuries and whatnot.
I’m turning the page on the Cabrera/Willis chapter b/c honestly, I’m not changing the team I root for b/c the owner is a freakin assclown and as long as Loria is running the ship your going to have to deal with his ineptitude if your a Marlin fan.
I value your opinions in the comments.

I was thinking about you when I saw this news break, JD. I think Cabrera is irreplaceable. That said, I do agree that this was the best package of prospects the Marlins could have gotten given the circumstances.
I don’t know much about Rabelo. But as far as the other two:
Maybin is going to be the next Torii Hunter, except with more power. This kid is the real deal. Great speed, great hitter, great center field defense. He strikes out quite a bit so he’s going to have to learn patience and plate discipline. But I’m telling you, JD… I think you’ll learn to like this guy a lot. It’ll take some time. He’s only like 20. But he’ll get there.
I LOVE Miller. He’s that rare left hander with absolute filthy stuff. He’s the kind of pitcher you bring up to eventually either be the ace or at the very least a top end of the rotation guy. His pitches can top out at 98 MPH and he’s got a pretty good slider. He has to work on his control but overall, the kid’s got good stuff…. my two cents….

Oh I’m excited Dude I really am. I’ve turned the page. I’ll have a breakdown in the next day or so for all our new guys we acquired in this deal.
Miller is a HUGE upgrade to Dontrelle.

You’re right. What else can you do but turn the page. The Marlins got a couple of very solid prospects who should turn into great players.
And also there’s this I found on BP:

Far be it for me to suggest a topic for you, but how about a nice year-end look at the most miserable sports year in city history.
This trade was the teal-colored cherry on top of the shit sundae that is the 2007 Miami sports year.
Dolphins, Canes, Heat – all rock bottom. Panthers lame again. Marlins just dumped our boys. Even the OB and Marino’s records (and maybe the ‘72 Fins) are gone.
Somebody needs to sum this up.

I hear ya Jon I really do. I’m one of the biggest homers in the world and I may try to spin certain things on this site to bring out that silver lining but this is def rock bottom, I have no excuse for it.
Your idea of a year end look at the misery is a good one. I usually do a year in a review of the posts of the past year. If I have time to write something up original I will post it.
I would also welcome any guest writers who may want to get something off their chest. I would call it the “Commenter’s Commentary”. I would give you your own post with editor name and if interested would allow future posts as well.
Has a nice ring to it. Let me know if you or anyone would like to get involved. With my busy schedule, I am always looking for more contributors.
