Flawed
This team is flawed, plain and simple. The book has been written on how to get Marlin hitters out and it’s being passed around the league like a limited edition box of HGH. Last night was another example of the bad mentality the Marlins hitters have been living and dying by all season long. Numerous times the Marlins were in the position to have big innings only to fail to get any runs across. It’s one thing to swing for the fences in every at bat, it’s another thing not to be able to just put the ball in play when necessary.
I’m a realist when it comes to the Marlins. I understand they have the lowest payroll in baseball and are one of the worst teams defensively in the league. This still doesn’t explain the concept of not knowing how to move a runner over from 2nd to 3rd with one out or hitting a fly ball late in the game to sacrifice a runner in to score.
Everyone wants to be the hero and it was apparent again in the 9th inning of last nights loss. Look, I didn’t think we were actually going to come back against [[Carlos Marmol]] in the 9th but it’s the lack of fundamental baseball that drives me nuts when it comes to the Marlins and there struggles on offense.
The Marlins are struggling badly. Since the All Star break the Marlins are hitting .205 as a team and have 39 hits in there last 190 at bats. We are 3-3 during that stretch.
We may need to pick up a relief pitcher at the deadline but I think a quality bat would also do the trick in this lineup. Someone who knows how to work the count and can extend the opposing pitcher more than 10 pitches an inning.
Of course last nights loss was not helped due to the spectacular web gem by Mark DeRosa late in the game. Fredi Gonzalez’ thoughts….
“I’ve seen that guy play second base, third base and the outfield. He is a hell of an athlete. I thought the ball was by him, and he makes that catch.
“Maybe if I see him in Atlanta this winter, there will have to be some tire-slashing.”
Perhaps that’s the next course of action for this team, slashing tires.
Your thoughts?
