So the 2007 SporTech Matter Fantasy Pigskin league came to a conclusion on Monday with a final match up of THE MACHINE vs The Moops for the top spot. THE MACHINE was an early favorite to win it all post draft with his monster Tom Brady/Randy Moss combo and definitely did not disappoint in the finals. This year’s league was quite weird. Alot of ties mixed into this season with spots 3-7 with mediocre records ranging from 8-6 to 6-8-1. THE MACHINE finished the season with a winning roster consisting of…

QB - Tom Brady
WR - Randy Moss
WR - Anthony Gonzalez
WR - Santonio Holmes
RB - Ryan Grant
RB - Kevin Jones
TE - Vernon Davis

K - Phil Dawson

D - DeMeco Ryans
DB - Antonio Cromartie
DB - Michael Huff
DL - DJ Williams
DL - Ernie Sims

The top three finished as follows…

Congrats THE MACHINE! Stay posted b/c as soon as baseball registration becomes available we will have a SporTech baseball league, which is even more fun then football in my opinion.

Since you won the league, as a Fantasy Football champion you get to talk trash using Sportszilla’s This is Why We Play The Game Letter. Come on THE MACHINE we want to hear from you!!! Fill that sucker out and email it to me with whatever else you would like to leave in your own post and I will get it posted under your own editor account. Oh, we won’t be doing anything like these losers do so don’t get any ideas.

Congrats!!

Update: Just to add. Even though the league will be run through SporTech Matter next year, THE MACHINE takes over as league commish for winning this season and is allowed to make changes or additions to the scoring and rules for the league in 2008-2009. Once again congrats!

Silver Slugger Awards were issued yesterday. This is one of the awards I actually thought the Marlins could get involved in. After Hanley Ramirez was screwed out of the Hank Aaron Award to the “Most Exciting Player in the Game But is Still not As Good As Hanley” he now gets screwed to someone who plays in a sandbox for home games.

First baseman Prince Fielder of the Brewers and shortstop Jimmy Rollins of the Phillies, two of the top candidates for National League Most Valuable Player honors, each picked up their first Silver Slugger, along with Dodgers catcher Russell Martin, Tigers second baseman Placido Polanco, Diamondbacks pitcher Micah Owings, Devil Rays first baseman Carlos Pena and Mets third baseman David Wright.

You do the math. .296/.344/.531 vs .332/.386/.562.

Hanley Ramirez is going to need to make some more room on his trophy shelf because more and more are going to start rolling in. Let’s start with his most recent award, voted by his peers as The Sporting News’ top shortstop in the National League. In 2007 he batted .332 with 29 home runs, 81 RBIs, 51 stolen bases and a franchise-record 125 runs scored. Hanley had a message for all his peers who voted him as the best shortstop…

“I want to thank the players. There are a lot of guys who were deserving, but only one that could win,” Ramirez said. “This is what you work for, to be recognized. I want to thank my teammates because you can’t do it alone.”

So young, so humble, how can you not like this kid? He doesn’t have that cocky look at me attitude and goes about his business on a daily basis. He doesn’t need fancy top step dugout dances or loud chants coming through the loud speakers at Dolphin Stadium. It’s just business as usual.

Ramirez’s agent is not surprised by his numbers and never expected a sophomore slump from Hanley…

“This year in Spring Training, he was in my office, and he said, ‘I’m going to hit 30 homers, and I’m going to be MVP.’ I said, ‘MVP of the team?’ He said, ‘MVP of the league.’ We kind of laughed it off, but it showed how confident he was. He was unbelievable this year.”

Amazing, simply amazing. When does Spring Training start?

Whether he was angry he didn’t make the All-Star team or he was just trying to head into the break on a hot streak, Hanley Ramirez finally caught attention of MLB and has been awarded the Player of the Week honor for July 2-8, 2007. He earned the honor by hitting .520 — second in the NL — with 12 hits, a 1.087 slugging percentage and three home runs in the past week. He also led the league in doubles (four), and had a .560 on-base percentage and six RBIs in that span. Sergio Mitre on Hanley Ramirez the up and coming superstar…

“It’s no secret, he can play,” Marlins starter Sergio Mitre said after Saturday’s win. “He can run, throw and hit. As long as he keeps doing that, I don’t think anybody can stop him. If he doesn’t hit, he will help you in the infield. When he can put all the things together — steal bases, play defense, hit — he’s pretty unreal.”

While I wouldn’t go as far as Mitre and say he helps you out in the field, we did see flashes of brilliance this weekend in LA as Hanley put together an incredible week both on offense and defense. The individual awards are starting to pile up for the Marlins. Florida now leads the NL with three Player of the Week winners this year. Miguel Cabrera took home the award in the season’s opening week and the week of June 4. Here is a breakdown of Hanley Ramirez’s week on a day by day basis…

Cheers to Hanley with many more to come!

Apparently a strained hamstring wasn’t enough of a setback for Miguel Cabrera to take some hardware home this week. After getting back to back days off to rest a sore hammy, Cabrera turned in a week with a .476 batting average and a 1.048 slugging percentage. Coming off of the rest, he had multiple RBIs in all three of the Marlins games against the Devil Rays. Via MLB press release…

The day off didn’t affect Cabrera’s gaudy numbers for the week. In addition to his .476 batting average, he also had three home runs, eight RBIs, 22 total bases, six runs scored and one triple.

This was the second NL Player of the Week award for Cabrera. He also picked up the honor in the opening week of the 2007 season after helping the Marlins to a 4-2 start.

Cabrera is currently in second behind David Wright in All Star voting. Start voting now and help Cabrera get the starting spot!

Yeah it’s a slow news day.

During the first week of each month, you can visit pepsiclutch.mlb.com to vote for the player you believe was the best clutch performer during the previous month. At the conclusion of the regular season, fans will have the opportunity to vote on the Major League Baseball Clutch Performer of the Year Presented by Pepsi award winner from among six finalists selected by a special MLB.com editorial panel. Fans also will be able to enter for a chance to win a trip to the 2008 All-Star Game. The Major League Baseball Clutch Performer of the Year Presented by Pepsi award will be presented during the coming postseason — the newest honor in the official MLB Awards lineup. This month our very own Josh “The Hammer” Willingham is up for the very deserving nomination…

Josh Willingham, LF, Marlins
An unlikely hero, Willingham stepped forth as one of Florida’s best hitters in May. His laundry list of big games began on the first day of the month, when he keyed a 5-2 victory over the Mets by driving in five runs — and it continued when he ripped a game-tying solo homer in a 5-4 victory on May 4. Willingham only picked up steam from there, with two game-winning hits. The first — and most theatrical — was a three-run, walk-off homer to beat the Dodgers on May 10. Also notable was a May 16 game against Pittsburgh, when he ripped an important RBI double in the eighth inning.

Check highlights from May for Josh Willingham.

Cast your vote here. This month Hammer is going up against Fausto Carmona, Jack Cust, Ken Griffey Jr., Cole Hamels, and Felipe Lopez.
