Hanley Ramirez holds up on a throw to first after forcing out Washington Nationals’ Ryan Church during the second inning of a baseball game Friday.

With 14 home runs and 27 stolen bases, Ramirez is one of three Marlins to have a season where he’s hit 10-plus homer and stolen 25-plus stolen bases. Ramirez did it during his 2006 National League Rookie of the Year season, when he swiped 51 bases and connected on 17 homers.

The multitalented shortstop is making a statement that he perhaps is the best player at his position in the National League. Although he wasn’t picked to the All-Star team, it’s hard to dispute his numbers: .332 batting average, 72 runs scored, 124 hits, 15 homers, 39 RBIs, 27 stolen bases and a .388 on-base percentage.

But Jose Reyes is the most exciting player in baseball.

Miguel Olivo picked off two runners in one innning in Monday’s loss to the White Sox. When asked if Fredi Gonzalez has ever seen two guys get picked off in one inning…

“Only in Nintendo,” he said. “I’ve never seen two guys get picked off in the same inning. (Olivo) likes to throw. We’ve actually talked to him about backing off a little bit; just pick off when you think you have a shot. He’s looking to get an out and he’s darn good at it.”

With Michael Barrett being traded to the Padres, Olivo doesn’t have someone breathing down his neck. Unless the FO finally decides to call up John Baker.

Ever since joining the Florida Marlins, Armando Benitez and Kevin Gregg have been dominant. Since coming over in a deal that sent Randy Messenger to the Giants, Mando has thrown 7 innings of 1 run ball surrendering only 4 total hits. He has struck out 5 and walked only 2 proving to be a solid setup man for Kevin Gregg.

Gregg has saved 10 out of 10 games this season and has kept his ERA to a tiny 2.61. We have quickly formed one of the stronger back ends of a bullpen in the National League. A combo of Matt Lindstrom, Henry Owens, and Taylor Tankersley have proved to be a stopgap for the 7th.

Oh yeah and in case I didn’t mention it…

Mitre, who had to leave his last start because of a strained hamstring, was sailing along, breaking bats and slamming the door on the Braves, but Gonzalez pulled him after the fifth inning with the Marlins leading 1-0. Mitre had thrown just 58 pitches.

Sergio Mitre allowed four hits, struck out three and extended his streak without allowing an earned run to 23 2/3 innings.

Mitre is quickly turning into the Marlins ace this season and developing a wicked sinker along the likes of Brandon Webb and Derek Lowe. Next time you get a chance, make it out to a home game Mitre starts.

Mitre is also currently rocking one of the coolest goatee’s in the league.

Mitre season quick stats: REC 2-2 | SV 0 | ERA 1.59 | WHIP 1.08
