Our next player to focus on in Matter All About is the Holland Hammer Rick Vanden Hurk. Rick was on the fast-track all season, Vanden Hurk actually was called up for an April 10 start against Milwaukee, and he pitched in the big leagues before throwing one pitcher higher than Class A ball. The right-hander had most recently been with Triple-A Albuquerque, where he was 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA in two starts. Now he is up with the big club with the chance to stick around for a while with the plethora of injuries that have hit the Fish this season. So let’s take a look at this Holland stud in today’s Matter All About.

Short Bio
Rick Vanden Hurk (born Henricus van den Hurk on May 22, 1985 in Eindhoven, Netherlands), nicknamed “The Holland Hammer”, is a starting pitcher who plays for the Florida Marlins organization. Vanden Hurk graduated from Fort Lauderdale Prepatory School in 2003. Prior to his major league debut in 2007, he had never pitched above Class-A. He underwent ligament replacement surgery on his right arm in 2005. In 2006, Vanden Hurk started five games for the Gulf Coast League Marlins in rookie ball and three more games for the Jupiter Hammerheads of High-A. In the rookie league, Vanden Hurk allowed just two runs on four hits in 15 innings of work, while striking out 26 batters. With the Hammerheads, he allowed three earned runs on five hits through ten innings and striking out 15.
On April 9, 2007, Vanden Hurk was promoted to the Marlins from the Double-A Carolina Mudcats when pitcher Ricky Nolasco was placed on the disabled list. At the time of his debut, he was the youngest player in the National League. He made his first major league appearance on April 10, starting against the Milwaukee Brewers. A rain delay cut his debut short after 4 2/3 innings, in which he allowed one earned run on five hits, with five strikeouts and three walks. Vanden Hurk was sent back to Double-A after the team’s April 24 loss to the Atlanta Braves. In his his fourth appearance, he pitched just one inning while giving up six earned runs on four hits and four walks. Pitcher Nate Field was called up from Triple-A Albuquerque to take his roster spot.
On June 5, the Marlins called up Vanden Hurk to throw the second game of a double header. He went six innings without giving up a hit until Yunel Escobar hit a double to lead off the 7th inning. He did not give up a run and earned his first win. He was sent again to Double-A on June 16.
During the 2007 midseason Vanden Hurk was selected to the All-Star Futures Game.

“To get this experience and to represent the Marlins for Holland in the Futures Game was awesome,” said the right-hander, who speaks five languages. “It was just an awesome experience to be around those guys.
“I feel comfortable. I know what I have to do out there. I just have to keep pitching like I am, and making sure I’m throwing down in the zone, so I can go longer into the games.”
This kid is alot of fun to watch. He seems to be a generally good kid and I hope he sticks around for a while. If he can get his pitches per inning down he will be very successful for the rest of the season.
Our Matter All About feature continues with recent call up Brett Carroll. Carroll had a rough landing in the bigs committing 2 errors in centerfield on one play. No one said it’s easy kid! Brett is an interesting character. He totally reminds me of a cheap mans Eric Byrnes. Will run into a wall for you an hustle out every ground ball. So far he has picked up his game and shown he can play both centerfield and right field when Jeremy Hemida needs a break to get his head out of his ass. So without further ado, here is Brett Carroll’s, Matter All About…

Brett Carroll (born October 3, 1982 in Knoxville, Tennessee) is a Major League Baseball outfielder for the Florida Marlins. He was selected in the 10th round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft and signed June 21, 2004. A 10th round pick out of Middle Tennessee State in 2003, Carroll had what was becoming a typically ho-hum 2006 campaign but he did manage to slug 17 combined homeruns while with Jupiter and Carolina. Still, it was looking like Brett would eventually lose the “prospect” status and just fade off. That was until he arrived at the Arizona Fall League where he put his name back on the prospect map. Against some of the best prospects in baseball, Brett hit .284/.337/.486 with 3 homeruns and 1 stolen base. One of the nice things about Carroll is the fact that he can play all three outfield positions and play them well. He has good instincts out there with a strong accurate arm as well. A long shot to make the Marlins in Spring Training, in a limited amount of at bats Brett showed off his tools in his first big league camp. He opened up 2007 repeating AA Carolina. Apparently his play in the AFL was no fluke as he hit .270/.359/.490 in 100 at bats with the Mudcats. He still struck out alot (37k) but he was making much more contact as he was a career .240 hitter coming into this season. With Reggie Abercrombie getting called up to the bigs in May, that opened the door for Brett in AA Albuquerque and he didn’t disappoint. In 126 at bats, he hit .302/.341/.548 to go with 6 homeruns. And while the strikeouts went way up to 57, he walked 18 times which was a major improvement over his 6 walks in Carolina.

“This is a great opportunity, and I’m looking forward to it,” said Carroll, who combined to bat .288 with nine homers and 40 RBIs for Double-A Carolina and Albuquerque. “I’m looking forward to the challenge. In Spring Training, I just had to pay my time and make the best of it. There are a lot of great players in the organization. I feel fortunate to have this opportunity.”
Matter All About continues with our second pick in the 2007 draft. John Beck was born in Hayward, California, his parents Wendell (a former track and field athlete for Brigham Young) and Julie Beck moved to Arizona. He first started playing football as a child at eight years old, and later became an Eagle Scout. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Lisbon, Portugal from 2000 through 2002. In May of 2004 he married Barbara Burke of Ferron, Utah. To say this kid is interesting is an understatement, let’s take a look at his Matter All About…

As a 22-year old true freshman, Beck earned Academic All-Mountain West honors and competed in eight games, including four starts, becoming only the second true freshman to start at quarterback in Brigham Young history (vs. Stanford), completing 22-of-45 attempts for a season-high 279 yards against the Cardinal, including a season-long 56-yard bomb to Rodney Wilkerson. His first career victory occurred on Oct. 4, leading the Cougars to a 44-36 win at San Diego State. He later saw action at fourth-ranked USC, completing one pass for 12 yards and carrying the ball four times for 29 yards..As a senior, Beck was ranked as the 2nd best quarterback in the country by ESPN as measured in quarterback efficiency ratings (173.27). He led Brigham Young to a record of 10-2, with a 8-0 record in the Mountain West Conference. He was a finalist for the Davey O’Brien and Unitas Golden Arm Awards, and created buzz on the Heisman watch lists. One site that tracks college football had him #4 on the Heisman watch list. He was named the Walter Camp Football Foundation National Offensive Player of the week following the come-from-behind victory over Utah on the last game of the 2006 season.
Pros
Has a lean frame with room for additional growth, showing average overall muscle tone, good arm length and large, soft hands … Runs with a normal stride and has the functional hip snap to change directions and avoid pocket pressure … Has good balance and adequate body control throwing on the move, demonstrating good hip rotation … Has decent foot quickness in his pass set and shows good quick-twitch muscle fibers … Very intelligent player who has no problem executing a complicated game plan
Cons
Needs to add more bulk and strength to his frame to absorb punishment in the pocket and, even though he is able to move around the pocket, he is no threat running with the ball … Has good arm strength for the short-to-intermediate area, but realizes that he lacks the raw power to air the ball out consistently, keeping the game plan within his athletic talents … Lacks ideal height and valid speed, but makes up for it with good short-area avoid skills and a quick release to unleash the ball on time

The Matter All About segment is back this time focusing on the Miami Dolphin’s top 2 draft picks. Later in the week I will focus on the next 2 picks as well. Matter All About gives the casual South Florida fan a chance to familiarize themselves with some of the newer and younger players to enter the South Florida sports scene. Being as this weekend was draft weekend and the Dolphins did their usual job of giving fans a heart attack with their first overall pick, I figured I would settle some nerves and show everyone just what we are getting. So without further ado here is Matter All About (Draft Edition).

Ted Ginn Jr has received praise for his speed and agility, as well as his ability to turn routine plays into big gains and touchdowns.
Pros
Game-breaking skill player with home-run speed. Quick releasing off the line, has opponents playing back on their heels, and consistently stretches the field. Possesses a terrific burst of speed and runs to daylight if given the slightest space of open room. Fast laterally and makes the reception in stride. Effortlessly makes the difficult reception downfield running full-tilt.
Cons
Not big, and beaten out in physical battles. Easily brought down at the initial point of attack. Has trouble handling the jam.

In honor of making the big club, I decided to dedicate the first 2007 Florida Marlins Matter All About to Alejandro De Aza. Most of you by now probably heard the news that De Aza has been given the chance to start in centerfield this season for the Florida Marlins. Alejandro is an intriguing 22-year-old prospect from the Dominican Republic. Another lefty batter, De Aza can play all three outfield spots, and he is batting over .330 in Spring Training. De Aza was considered a dark horse from the beginning to win the centerfield job, with Alex Sanchez and Eric Reid being the favorites.

De Aza played 69 games at Double-A Carolina last season, and now the speedy Dominican Republic native will be the lone rookie on the Marlins’ starting opening day roster. De Aza will turn 23 April 11, but he boasts a career minor-league OPS of .720 in five season. Not exactly prospect-type numbers. Despite a lack of power, he has has averaged almost 24 steals a season.

”That was the easy one this morning,” Gonzalez said.
De Aza said he immediately called home to the Dominican to break the good news to his mother.
‘She just went `Wow,’ ” he said. “It’s a big dream.”
Should be a fun season watching De Aza go through his ups and downs this year with the Fish. Stay tuned as SporTech will be continuing the Matter All About series into the regular season.

In honor of his first NBA start and putting in a quality performance, I decided to do the next installment of Matter All About about Miami Heat PG Chris Quinn. Chris finished up the night with 14 points and five assists and was a maniac on the defensive end. I feel he is much more valuable to our starting rotation then Gary Payton. As long as Ron Rothstein is at the helm, I think we can expect to see Chris get more minutes. Let’s check out his Matter All About…

Matter All About: Jason Kapono
You might remember that last year I had started a SporTech weekly segment to introduce some of our rookie Florida Marlins. This went over pretty well as I received a total of 2 comments regarding the Matter All About segment. In the words of Borat, Niiiiiiice! Regardless of the reaction I have decided to fire back up the Matter All About segment. Since the Miami Heat are becoming relevant again, since Shaq’s vacation is almost over, I figured I would spotlight some of the key ingredients to the Heat’s current West Coast surge. You might be surprised who has attributed to the Heat’s current success. Let’s start with Jason Kapono…
Short Bio
Jason Kapono (born February 4, 1981 in Long Beach, California) is an American professional basketball player currently with the Miami Heat of the NBA. After a storied college career at UCLA, where he ranks third on UCLA’s all-time scoring list, as well as being the first Bruin to earn First Team All-Pac-10 honors all four years and the only UCLA player to lead the school in scoring four straight years, Kapono was a second round draft choice of the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2003 NBA Draft. After his rookie season with the Cavs, he was selected by the Charlotte Bobcats in the 2004 expansion draft, where he improved his scoring average from 3.5 to 8.5 points per game. Later, he was traded to the Miami Heat. He currently wears the number 24. Kapono was a part of the 2005-2006 NBA Champion Miami Heat team. In the 2006-2007 season, Kapono’s shooting skills have improved substantially. As of Jan. 10, 2007, Jason is averaging 9.1 pts per contest and leads the NBA in 3-pt FG accuracy, shooting at a 53% clip from beyond the arc. He is also shooting 50% from the field and nearly 90% from the free-throw line. He has averaged almost 15 pts per contest in his last five games.

Some scouts called Hermida the best high school hitter since Eric Chavez. Others saw a young Andy Van Slyke or Paul O’Neill. Hermida himself identified more with Shawn Green. Whichever comparison you prefer, there’s no denying his polished hitting approach and advanced maturity. He has a smooth, quick stroke, top-notch plate discipline, a strong work ethic and first-rate makeup. He’s comfortable working deep in counts and has no trouble taking pitches on the outer half to the gap in left-center. Hermida is durable, as he played through a minor ankle problem in 2002 and a minor heel injury in 2003. Though just an average runner, he has excellent instincts on the bases. He was thrown out just twice in 30 steal attempts last season, both on the back end of double steals. His arm is much improved to where it’s now average.

Short Bio
Jeremy Ryan Hermida (born January 30, 1984 in Marietta, Georgia) is an outfielder in Major League Baseball who plays for the Florida Marlins. He bats left handed and throws right handed. Called up from Double-A Carolina, Hermida made his major league debut with the Florida Marlins on August 31, 2005. On the first at-bat of his major league career, he did something only one other person had done. At Dolphins Stadium, he had a pinch-hit grand slam in the seventh inning off the St. Louis Cardinals’ Al Reyes on a 1-1 pitch in the Marlins’ 10–5 loss Hermida GS. Hermida, who hit 18 home runs and 63 RBI in 118 games in Double-A, batted for pitcher Brian Moehler and homered to right field, some 373 feet away. But he made a name for himself by becoming the third player in baseball history to hit a grand slam in his first game, the second to do it in his first at-bat, and the first to pull it off as a pinch-hitter.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the only other player with a grand slam in his first major league at-bat was pitcher Bill Duggleby, who did it for the Philadelphia Phillies at home against the New York Giants in the second inning on April 21, 1898. Duggleby was the winning pitcher that day. Bobby Bonds of the San Francisco Giants also hit a slam in his first game off Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Jack Purdin, doing so in his third plate appearance on June 25, 1968, at Candlestick Park. The Giants won 10–0.
After graduating from Wheeler High School in Marietta, Georgia, he was the Marlins’ No. 1 draft pick in 2002, and one of the highest-rated minor league players this season, Hermida was a rising star in minor league before being brought up. The Marlins were not looking for him to make a significant contribution the way Miguel Cabrera did when he was brought up from Double-A in June 2003, but Hermida has been compared to Braves’ rookie Jeff Francoeur ever since the two were 14 years old growing up in the Atlanta area. Francoeur has emerged as a strong National League Rookie of the Year candidate. The Marlins promoted Hermida before September 1 so that he would be eligible to be on the Marlins’ postseason roster. However, the Marlins, who led the wild-card race on September 13, lost 12 of their next 14 games and were eliminated from postseason contention.

[MATTER ALL ABOUT: RICKY NOLASCO]
A year ago on June 28, Ricky Nolasco was making his ninth and final start of the year for Triple-A Iowa–a stint that concluded with a 9.30 ERA and an average of less than four and a half innings per start. This year on June 28, however, the fourth round Cubs draft pick in 2001 was named to the Southern League all-star team following a perfect record in the first half and the league’s second best ERA. Now he’s with the big club, the Florida Marlins throwing zero’s left and right, shutting down major league talent like he has been doing it for years. Coming off a near no-no, Ricky is truely turning into the top flight starting pitcher scouts thought he could be.

[MATTER ALL ABOUT: SCOTT OLSEN]
Coming off an eleven strikeout performance against the Pirates, I figured it was only fitting to focus our next Matter All About on Scott Olsen. Scottie O has had his ups and downs this season with the big club caused mostly by himself. Scott at times has had trouble keeping his anger inside and has caused confrontations with other teammates. Regardless of his young behavior he has turned in quite a season so far and should continue to be a dominant left handed force in the Marlins rotation for years to come (barring any frantic trade moves).
