Hrmmmm.
Obviously the Dolphins still have to fulfill the Rooney Rule which will take place on Monday with Minnesota Vikings Defensive Coordinator Leslie Frazier, but reports are saying that Tony Sparano will accept the Dolphins offer to become the next head coach once the Cowboys season ends. This report comes from the New Haven Register, hometown for Tony Sparano.
No official confirmation has been given regarding this report. I would expect a real announcement to come after the Leslie Frazier interview on Monday.
One small note. Just caught Barry Jackson’s column this morning. Check out some quotes regarding Tony Sparano and how respected he is among players and coaches in the league…
Dallas’ Jason Witten credits Sparano for transforming him into a Pro Bowler and one of the league’s top tight ends. Guard Leonard Davis credits Sparano for the improvement of the Cowboys’ offensive line, which has three Pro Bowlers this season.
And former Browns pro personnel director Keith Kidd, who worked with Sparano when he was Cleveland’s offensive line coach in 2000, said, “You knew being around Tony, he had special qualities. He demands respect and players respond.”
Sparano — who worked four years with new Dolphins czar Bill Parcells in Dallas — yells when needed (unlike Cam Cameron), but players like him, Cowboys people say.
”He’s very well-organized, very well-respected by the players,” Cowboys quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson said. “He is up-tempo, and those guys [offensive linemen] are not the easiest guys, but he keeps them motivated and on their toes.”
Update: The Dolphins are calling a New Haven Register report that they’ve chosen Tony Sparano to be their next head coach “100 percent false.”
All around Dolphin guru The Dude is reporting via Armando “I swear I am the man for the GM position” Salguero that Jeff Ireland will be named as the Dolphins new General Manager to replace Randy Mueller. Here are some details from Dolphins in Depth…
Club owner Wayne Huizenga flew to the team’s training facility at 12:20 — yes, I said flew as in aboard his helicopter — to meet the man who will work hand in hand with football czar Bill Parcells.
Although the deal is not yet final, it is believed very little can get in the way of this becoming official. Only a glitch on contract negotiations, or a glitch with the Dallas Cowboys who currently employ Ireland, or perhaps Ireland insults Huizenga’s family (kidding) could keep the hiring from happening.
Here’s your nice shiny new office with a view of the practice bubble Mr Ireland. Your first job? Fire Cam Cameron. Bummer!
Update: Palm Beach Post reports this as a done deal. Jeff Ireland has reached an agreement to be the new Dolphins general manager and already is helping to decide who will be the team’s head coach, an NFL source has told The Palm Beach Post.
The Houston Chronicle reported that the Rockets would have some interest in trading for Heat guard Jason Williams, who has been inconsistent this season but has an attractive expiring contract. Another was mentioned in The (New York) Daily News, which claimed the Heat and Grizzlies are discussing a deal that would bring Mike Miller to Miami and send either Williams or Ricky Davis to Memphis.
The Heat has a number of needs, which include point-guard depth, a long-range shooter and help in the post. Riley recently said he anticipated there would be plenty of misinformation affiliated with the Heat’s interest.
”The real stuff, if anything happens, most people don’t know about it,” Riley said.
I’ve been reading and hearing from other sources that any Memphis deal would also include Stromile Swift. Regardless, the Heat need help from all around. Hopefully Riley can put together some crafty moves not including Udonis Haslem and Daequan Cook.
Read some other trade scenarios over on the MiamiHeatWave blog.
Prior to the information becoming public, we had reached an agreement in principle with Parcells, and we met with him this morning to complete the contract. At that time, we were made aware by Parcells that he was considering a revised offer from the Miami Dolphins. He later informed us that he would not be signing a contract with us.
Can anyone else say hell yes? Bill Parcells would work wonders in this front office and could possibly sway his Patriot friends to join him in Miami. I feel Tuna has always been overrated as a head coach and underrated as a front office guy.
Stay tuned for updates.
Update: Miami Herald got this one. One source with knowledge of the situation is telling The Herald Parcells’ agent, Jimmy Sexton, is negotiating with the Dolphins. The source would not say how close Parcells might be to joining the Dolphins, if at all.
Update 4:56: The Miami Herald reports Bill Parcells and the Dolphins are “entering the final stages” of talks to make him a member of the organization’s front office.
Update 9:28: Armando has the scoop. The Bill Parcells deal is done. It is for four years according to a source. Hank Goldberg of WQAM radio in Miami tells me that his sources say Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga has agreed NOT to sell the Dolphins for the four years so he could land Parcells. The Dolphins are expected to introduce Parcells before the end of this week, barring a last-minute glitch in negotiations.
One commenter on Armando’s blog points out the work Parcells did in Dallas from 2003 to 2006. Pretty impressive to say the least…

Hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving. I ate entirely way too much and was stuck at work yesterday. Damn the man. I’m sure everyone is aware that the Angels snuck in on the Torii Hunter bonanza and signed him to a longterm contract. This type of move could pave the way for a Cabrera deal, especially now that the Angels have an abundance of outfielders and pitching. New GM Tony Reagins recently noted that the Hunter signing would not stop the Angels pursuit of other high priced chips like Miguel Tejada or Miguel Cabrera. Here is the proposed deal according to MLBTR…
Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times opines that the acquisition of Hunter could make it easier to incur the loss of Howie Kendrick, a potential major chip in a Cabrera trade. Other players sought by the Marlins are catcher Jeff Mathis, pitcher Nick Adenhart, and one of Joe Saunders, Jered Weaver, or Ervin Santana. That’s quite steep asking price, but in line with the Marlins demands from the Dodgers of Matt Kemp, Clayton Kershaw, Andy LaRoche, and one more prospect.
Obviously the Marlins would not want Ervin Santana, well, because he sucks. I wouldn’t mind a package of Kendrick, Mathis, Willits and either Joe Saunders, Jered Weaver or Nick Adenhart. Fills alot of holes right away. Stay tuned.
Just get this done already.
