Classic stuff I’ve been jamming to lately. Alice in Chains has been one of my favorite bands for a long time now. The track featured above “Would?” appeared in the movie Singles. The band also appeared in the film, performing the songs “Would?” and “It Ain’t Like That” during one of the club scenes. The early release of “Would?” helped build anticipation for the group’s next LP.

Pick up the album Alice in Chains album Essential Alice in Chains on the Amazon link to the right and enjoy classic Jerry Cantrell.

Alice in Chains (obviously without Jerry Cantrell) is coming in concert to the Sound Advice in West Palm Beach with Velvet Revolver. Grab your tickets here.

One of the cooler music videos you will ever see. Roni Size came to national prominence in 1997 as the founder and leader of Reprazent, a drum and bass collective. That year they won the Mercury Prize for their album, New Forms, the album the above track is featured on.

Much of the acclaim centred around Size’s melding of the new with the old - the propulsive jungle beats accompanied by live drums and double bass. The band - Size (compositions/programming), DJ Krust, Onallee (vocals), Dynamite MC and rapper Bahamadia (a former protégé of Gang Starr) - came together on Bristol’s highly fertile and disparate club scene. As a result, Reprazent’s sleek, highly musical take on drum ‘n’ bass is equally informed by hip-hop, funk, soul and house.

Enjoy!

I’m not a big fan of Kanye West. I think his lyrics tend to border on the cheesy side but I do love his production and that is one of the biggest keys to me enjoying a track or album. If the beat makes my head bob it will usually catch my attention. That is why I love this new Kanye West track “Stronger”. Stronger is the first single off West’s new album due out in late August, Graduation.

Stronger features a sample from the song “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” by the French group Daft Punk, who received songwriter credit and appeared in the music video.

While Kanye loves his new single he admits it does not compare to the original by Daft Punk.

Pre-order your new Kanye West cd using the Amazon link to the right.

Today’s song choice comes from superproducer UNKLE which is a British musical outfit founded in 1994 by school friends James Lavelle and Tim Goldsworthy. Originally categorized as trip-hop, the group once included producer DJ Shadow and has employed a variety of guest artists and producers.

The above track is called Lonely Soul and features vocals from Richard Ashcroft.

This by far is one of my favorite UNKLE tracks. This is off the debut album called Psyence Fiction. I highly recommend it to whomever is looking to get into UNKLE.

Some guests that appear on the album range from The Beastie Boys, Kool G Rap, Jason Newsted and Thom Yorke.

I probably haven’t mentioned it before but I’m a huge music fanatic. Genre’s ranging from Rock, HipHop, to Electronica I have a little taste for everything. Recently I’ve been on a huge Rock kick specifically enjoying the new Smashing Pumpkins album and the new Velvet Revolver. I got a Tool kick lately and forgot how good they were. The above video is one of my favorite Tool tracks. Danny Carey of Tool is such an amazing drummer.

Not sure if this video is SFW but enjoy nonetheless.

Blog Plug: One of my favorite Jazz blogs is by SporTech commentor and guest poster Mike. He runs a great Smooth Jazz blog called JazzHQ with reviews, charts and articles. Feel free to stop by to enjoy nothing but the best in Smooth Jazz information.

I was inspired by a thread over on MB.com to post the current walkup songs for all our Florida Marlins. If your not familiar, a walk up song is the music the stadium plays when the batter is coming up to bat. Amazingly Wikipedia actually has an entry for this with an extensive list of most MLB players songs. Personally my favorite on the Marlins is Hammer’s Even Flow by Pearl Jam. The only problem I have is they do not play enough of the song. Oh wait, that’s right, we go to the ballpark to watch baseball! So without further ado, he is the Marlins list (courtesy of user Rabbethan on MB.com)…

Aaron Boone - Jim Jones - “We Fly High”
Alfredo Amezaga - Pitbull - “Bojangles”
Armando Benitez - Notorious B.I.G - “Big Papa”
Brett Carroll - Ozzy Osbourne - “Crazy Train”
Cody Ross - Led Zeppelin - “Kashmir”
Dan Uggla - Roy Jones Jr. - “Can’t Be Touched”
Dontrelle Willis - Fat Joe feat Lil Wayne - “Make It Rain”
Hanley Ramirez - DJ Unk - “2 Step” and Dj Unk - “Walk It Out”
Henry Owens - Metallica - “-Human”
Jason Wood - Red Hot Chili Peppers - “Can’t Stop”
Jeremy Hermida - Mystikal - “Here I Go”
Joe Borchard - Korn - “Got The Life”
Josh Willingham - Pearl Jam - “Evenflow”
Kevin Gregg - Godsmack - “Keep Away”
Matt Treanor - Guns N’ Roses - “My Michelle”
Miguel Cabrera - Daddy Yankee - “Machete”
Mike Jacobs - Elvis Crespo - “Suavemente”
Reggie Abercrombie - T.I. - “The King Back”
Rick Vanden Hurk - Van Halen - “Jump”
Sergio Mitre - Metallica - “Seek and Destroy”

What are some of your favorite players walk up songs? Also, if you were blessed to play in The Show, what would your walkup song be?

I think I would have to go with AZ - Affirmative Action.

I just noticed and article on Engadget regarding problems the new iTunes is causing for some ipod users. The following is taken from Engadget:

Specifically, users on Apple’s web forums and our own tipsters are reporting that some new nanos aren’t being recognized in Windows iTunes 7, music being played through iTunes 7 sounds “scratchy” at times, CoverFlow doesn’t always entirely download properly, and there are allegations that iTunes 7 has become, slow, bloated, and a resource hog. Some of us here at Engadget who have installed iTunes 7 haven’t noticed any bad playback or other slowdowns, but have been dissappointed that very few of the albums on our machines have successfully downloaded album art. Furthermore, The Sydney Morning Herald called iTunes 7 a “lemon” yesterday and went on to report that: “Both Mac and PC users appear to be affected by the glitches being reported, and numerous different threads on the Apple discussion forum have described a range of technical issues.” Oh, and did we mention that many professionally produced podcasts — including CNET’s Buzz Oud Loud, Popular Mechanics, and our own — are reportedly not working. If Apple doesn’t do something about this pretty soon, people might start calling it iCan’t — as in: “I can’t play my music anymore.”

I don’t know about you ipod users but I am sticking with my excellent copy of Anapod Explorer.

Despite the success in the Kazzaa case earlier this week for the RIAA it seems they have actually suffered a massive set back in their quest to stifle the internet’s illegal download community.

In the recent case in California of Virgin vs. Marson, where Mrs. Marson had a claim being made against her on the basis that she owned the computer and paid for the internet through which the illegal file sharing was taking place, the RIAA has decided to discontinue the case. The assumption being made is that the use of an IP address as evidence against file sharers is not enough to prove that the person being charged committed copyright infringement.

Others, as in this report, are now suggesting that the best way to defend yourself against the RIAA is to open up your WiFi network to your neighbours. Essentially, the more people who are using the internet through a shared IP address the weaker the evidence the RIAA can summon against you.

For the RIAA this situation couldn’t really get much worse. Despite the pyrrhic victory of having Kazzaa legitimised earlier in the week Ray Beckerman, leading RIAA attorney, made this comment regarding the recent landmark case:

“Faced with evidence that numerous other people had access to the Internet connection and/or the computer and that any of those people could have engaged in the allegedly infringing conduct.”

The RIAA and MPAA now appear desperate in their quest to prevent illegal downloading. The inquirer is even reporting that they are starting to slip subliminal messages about the ‘badness’ of internet piracy into modern films – Charlie Demerjian described the effort in the Hollywood blockbuster as thus:

“Now, they are slipping the message in through ‘blowoff’ lines, trying to infect modern culture. There was a scene in Miami Vice where they were discussing the big bad drug dealers, and how international they were. The good guys listed all the thing the bad guys were capable of bringing into the US, Cocaine, Heroin, etc, etc. They listed it as coke from Colombia, heroin from Afganistan, X from Y and A from B. Pretty normal stuff. At the end, they added ‘pirated software from China’. Blink.”

SporTech doesn’t feature much music on here, but let it be known that I am a huge music fan. Everything ranging from Rock, Hip-Hop, Electronic, etc… I got a chance to preview a promo copy of the new DJ Shadow LP entitiled “The Outsider”. Let me preface by saying DJ Shadow has and always will be my favorite DJ/Producer. His mix of downtempo beats with jazz funk really come unrivaled by most. His new album is set to drop September 4th. Let’s just say it’s interesting. I am assuming he is trying to expand his fanbase by utilizing more mainstream guests on the album that might appeal to the average Jay-Z or Puff Daddy fan. I can accept the fact the man is trying to expand his listeners as long as he kept the rest of the album real, WHICH HE SURE DID.

This CD most likely won’t go over well for most. I understand that. Give it a few listens and you might change your mind. Here is the tracklisting and some snippets of reviews from other sites.

DJ Shadow - The Outsider Tracklisting
1) Outsider Intro
2). This Time (I’m Gonna Try It My Way)
3). 3 Freaks- Featuring Keak Da Sneak & Turf Talk
4). Droop-E Drop
5). Turf Dancing-Feat. The Federation & Animaniaks
6). Keep Em Close-Feat. Nump
7). Seein Thangs-Feat. David Banner
8) . Broken Levee Blues
9). Artifact [Instrumental]
10). Backstage Girl-Feat. Phonte Coleman
11). Triplicate / Something Happened That Day
12). The Tiger-Feat. Sergio Pizzorno & Christopher Karloff
13). Erase You-Feat. Chris James
14). What Have I Done-Feat. Christina Carter
15). You Made It-Feat. Chris James
16). Enuff-Feat. Q-Tip & Lateef The Truth Speaker
17). Dats My Part-Feat. E-40

From Byroncrawford.com:

I really can’t see your typical DJ Shadow fan going crazy to the hyphy beats on this album, but hey prove me wrong. Meanwhile those dudes who are planning on buying the album ’cause it’s got E40 and David Banner on it should probably wait for the promised Bay Area EP, which will round-up all the hyphy essentials in one complete package (nh). Personally I quite liked parts of it, but felt it completely lacked cohesion. Lurking inside ‘The Outsider’ are three pretty good EPs struggling to get out. Selective downloading shall be the order of the day.

Cut Chemist’s views on the album via Billboard.com:

“This one is entirely different than any of his previous work, which is admirable as an artist,” longtime Shadow cohort Cut Chemist tells Billboard.com. “He feels challenged enough to change and isn’t afraid to do so.”

From SoleSides.com:

Here are two little tastes of the new DJ Shadow album, The Outsider. Shadow wasn’t lying when he said it would be diverse! “Enuff” is a quit-your-worryin’ club jam featuring Q-Tip and Lateef the Truth Speaker, while “You Made It”, featuring crooning by Chris James of the English band Stateless, is a dreamy, introspective, acoustic guitar-driven chill-out track.

Here is a live clip from a DJ Shadow concert taken from the DVD “In Tune and On Time:
